Ok, before you read this and think “this dude is crazy”, yes I do change my mind all the time. I’m never satisfied with something I have in hand and always want something to chase. It’s my nature, I’m learning to deal with it.

As I’ve said before, chasing Morneau cards has gotten to be a bit of a drag lately. I’m just not in to single color swatches and plain autographed cards. I like things that “pop” and there just isn’t much out there that I don’t have already. That being said, I’m happy to announce my new side project….The Patchworks Project

So what is TPP? Early last week I got bored one evening and started bouncing around ebay checking out cards that contained patch pieces and was amazed at how many really cool cards there are out there. After giving it a lot of thought, I decided that I would start to chase a few down and see where they ended.

The ccjp1first card I snagged was this great looking dual patch card of Chris Carpenter and Jake Peavy from the 2007 UD Premier. The Peavy patch by itself is pretty cool but it was the Carpenter patch that put this one over the top for me. The patch is actually a piece of the “Inaugural Season” patch that the Cardinals wore the season that the new Busch Stadium opened. I wasn’t sure at all where it would end but expected it to be around $20 or so. I was shocked when I won the card for $9! At that point, I knew I was going to get hooked and the Patchworks Project was going to be something that would keep me busy for awhle.

The day after I won the Carpenter/Peavy4319_1 card, I submitted a Best Offer on this Johan Santana jumbo patch card from the 2006 Exquisite Baseball product. Up until he was traded to the Mets, I was collecting Santana stuff along with my Morneau stuff. This was one card that at that time was out of my price range. But due to the dropping resale value of a lot of cards these days I decided to take a shot at it and won the card for about 1/3 what it was going for over a year ago.

Since that time I’ve been keeping my Watch List on ebay filled with neat looking patch cards. Some go for way more than I want to spend but some don’t and I have been able to pick up a few that look great.

I will admit that TPP may open up a can of worms that I was hoping would stay sealed. I’ve been doing very well with keeping strictly to baseball products over the last couple years. Even though there are a wealth of really nice football, hockey, and basketball products out there, I have stayed strong and stayed away. This new project ruined all of that. Personally I blame the guys on the message board I frequent. I watched these guys bust cases of this year’s Exquisite Football and looked at all the great patch cards and then I broke down and won this card:

This James Hardy card is numbered #64/75. I had some second guessing about buying it until it got to my house today and I have to say these Exquisite cards are amazing! They look even better in person than the scans and the on card signatures really put them over the top. I went with Hardy because as many of you know, I am an Indiana University alum and Hardy is about the best thing we’ve had in football for a long time.

So there you have it. That is my new side project and I am sure it’ll help keep me entertained in between cool Morneau pieces to chase down.
